International Resolutions and Directives
Besides the national legal and policy framework, the WRA’s work is governed by a number of international resolutions, targets and directives such as the EU Water Directives, the Human Right to Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation as well as the Millennium Development Goals.
European Union Water Directives
As applicant for EU membership, Albania strives to achieve compliance with the following EU Water Directives:
Human Right to Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation
Through its co-sponsoring of the UN Human Rights Council Resolution "The human right to safe drinking water and sanitation" (adopted on 28 September 2011) the Albanian Government has committed itself to adopt a human rights-based approach in the water sector.
Millennium Development Goals
In September 2000, Albania, along with 188 other nations, adopted the Millennium Declaration at the Millennium Summit, committing itself to achieve the Millennium Development Goals until 2015.
In July 2003, the Albanian Parliament passed the following Resolution in support of the Millennium Declaration:
The achievement of the Millennium Development Goal 7 - Ensure Sustainable Environmental Development - is one of the main policy objectives for the Albanian water sector. The National Water Supply and Sewerage Services Sector Strategy 2011-2017 endorses Albania’s commitment to Target 10: To halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation.
Further information on Albanian’s progress on MDG 7 can be found in the "Albania National Report on Progress Toward Achieving the Millennium Development Goals (Special Edition, July 2010).
